The Irish International 420 Class Association is proud to announce the introduction of the Chuckawalla Trophy, a new award generously donated by the Crosbie Family. This perpetual trophy is specifically designed to recognize and celebrate sailors who exemplify dedication to the 420 Class, a highly competitive and demanding teenage double-handed sailing dinghy class.
The Chuckawalla Trophy is unique in its focus on fostering the core values that define successful sailing pairs—partnership, teamwork, and loyalty. Unlike many awards that solely reward top-tier performance, the Chuckawalla Trophy acknowledges the sailors who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and growth over the course of the season, even if they are not yet competing in the Gold fleet. The trophy will be awarded each year at National Championships based on a points system.
To be eligible for the Chuckawalla Trophy, sailors will be evaluated on some key aspects:
Strong Partnership and Loyalty in the Boat:
This criterion emphasizes the importance of the relationship between helm and crew. The award will honour those who pairing consistently work together with mutual respect, understanding, and dedication, cultivating a strong and reliable partnership that stands out throughout the season.
Attendance at Championship Events:
Commitment to the 420 Class is also measured by participation in significant events. Points will be awarded for attendance at the four regional championships, Youth Nationals, and the National Championships. By attending these six events, sailors demonstrate their dedication to the class and their desire to improve and compete at a higher level.
A Trophy for Emerging Talent
The Chuckawalla Trophy is intended for sailors who are developing their skills and striving to break into the upper echelons of the 420 Class. It specifically targets those who have not yet reached the Gold fleet but show promise and determination. This trophy aims to encourage sailors who may not always be in the spotlight but are essential to the future of the sport. Points will be awarded where a pairing demonstrate improvement in performance over the season.
It is hoped that the creation of the trophy will encourage sailors to develop a lifetime enjoyment of participation in regular racing and to encourage them to develop skills which will enable them to sail any type of boat.
